Michael Mobley
From Holoprosencephaly
My family and I were told the next day that Michael had semi-lobar Holoprosencephaly. He was the most precious little baby boy I had ever seen. Michael’s dad (my boyfriend) died in a logging accident in June 2001. Michael was 6 months old then. I have a good support system. God gives special children to special people. We live with my parents.
Michael is 6 years old now. He is very involved with his surroundings. He is a happy and very social child. Michael enjoys life to the fullest. He lights up the room with his smile. He has extremely tight muscle tone and dystonia in his arms and legs. Michael walks with us holding him under his arms.
Michael loves swinging, using his remote control toys, computer, and trucks and tractors. He loves going to school. Michael’s education level is pre-k to kindergarten level. Michael is non-verbal but he makes his wants and needs known. He makes a lot of different sound combinations. Sometimes it sounds like words and we just take it has what he said. He does say “hey” and “ma” at times.
Michael’s eyes tell us a lot. Michael’s communication is through eye gaze, Go-Talk 4 communication board and Big-Mac switches with symbols. Michael gets PT, OT, and Speech at home and school. He is doing good with all the therapists. He plays tee-ball and soccer.
It is such a joy to watch Michael out there with the rest of his team. Michael smiles the whole time. Michael started hippo-therapy this year. He loves riding horses. His horse’s name is “Two Socks”. Michael is more relaxed after riding. He holds his head up more while riding and holds the reins. He also tells the horse to getty-up by squealing and smiling. I am extremely thankful that God gave Lit’l Michael to me. He is loved by his family. He touches the hearts of everyone he meets.
