Oral care should begin within 6 months of the arrival of the first primary tooth (usually by age 1). Children with neurological/neuromuscular disabilities may require special care when addressing oral health care needs if they are unable to cooperate or control involuntary movements that may interfere with treatment.
If children have the problems listed above, it may be beneficial to locate a dentist who has experience in dealing with disabled children. These professionals are qualified to deal with special problems that arise and may perform specialized dental care, such as scaling/cleaning under general anesthesia if the need arises. This may be done in a specialist’s office or at the local hospital.
